Welcome to Edmundston !
The City of Edmundston’s history, as we know it today, with its 17 000 citizens, goes back to 1998, when four neighbouring communities were amalgamated to form a new city. Saint-Jacques, Verret, Edmundston and Saint-Basile now form the Greater Edmundston area.
Located in northwestern New Brunswick, in Madawaska County, the city of Edmundston shares borders with Québec and the United States. The City is surrounded by the rolling hills of the Appalachian Mountains. |

The lazy Madawaska River flows through the City and falls into the majestic Saint-John River, natural border with the USA. The Transcanada Highway also goes through the City, coming from Québec or the Maritimes. Edmundston is the true gateway to the Atlantic region of Canada.
Historically, Saint-Basile was the area’s first settlement, and remains for this reason the heart of Madawaska County’s rich history. This was in the mid 18th century. For a long time, Saint-Basile was the area’s most populated settlement, up to the establishment of the railroad and the pulp and paper industry in 1917 in Edmundston. From then on, the area expanded to become, since the mid 20th century, the largest urban centre north of Fredericton, New Brunswick’s capital.
Covering an area of 280 km2, Edmundston spans from Saint-Basile to the east, Saint-Jacques to the west and Verret to the south. Edmundston is a city well worth discovering! Downtown Edmundston, located on both sides of the Madawaska River, has been planned to accommodate pedestrians and give them time to relax. Canada Road and De l’Église Street tells the story of the birth and evolution of today’s city. Saint-Jacques is at the heart of an important recreational and tourist complex, which includes a ski hill, the New Brunswick Botanical Gardens and the De la République Provincial Park. For its part, Saint-Basile is a truly historical community, with the Cyr House and the Hospitallers’ Convent and its museum showcasing the area’s rich past.
Through this Web site, I invite you to a virtual tour of our city, but I also invite you to a real-life visit. Check out everything Edmundston has to offer to its citizens, its visitors and its investors.
